My “Basic Knitted Baby Beanie” has been one of my most popular blog posts, and many of you have been requesting an adult version using Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (super bulky level 6 yarn, 80% acrylic/20% wool). These hats are quick to work up, look so stylish with the variety of colourways available, and are easy to care for because of the wool blend (machine washable and dryable).

Here are some of the hats I knitted using some beautiful colourways! This is a matching mommy and baby set using the “Arctic Ice” colorway – how pretty are these greys and pinks together? I LOVE how variegated yarn can work up with this striping as it is a surprise which color is coming next!

Basic Knitted Adult Hat

This set below uses one of my favourite colorways: Carousel! The pastel colors are so beautiful, and it is such a wonderful display of color during the drab winter months.

Basic Knitted Adult Hat

I made a matching baby, child and adult set using this gorgeous Mustard color! I think the brown faux fur pom poms and faux leather labels look so striking and luxurious against the mustard. How special would it be to gift this set to your loved ones? The adult and child hat patterns can be found below!

Here is the free pattern for my Basic Knitted Adult Hat:

Basic Knitted Adult Hat

Materials:

Notes:

  • This basic hat is knitted in the round starting with the ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches). The body is worked in stockinette (knit stitches in the round) with decreases towards the top to shape the crown.
  • Knitted hats have plenty of stretch and can fit heads of various sizes.
  • If you would like to make this hat larger, add more stitches to the initial cast on. If you would like to make this hat smaller, decrease the number of stitches when casting on. You could also continue using 9 mm needles for the body instead of switching to 10 mm needles for a more fitted hat.
  • If you would like to make this hat more slouchy, add more rounds to the body (add more rounds between R11-30). If you would like to make the hat less slouchy, decrease the number of rounds of the body (take away rounds between R11-30).
  • For a seamless join at the very beginning, cast on an extra stitch (i.e. 41 stitches in this design). Slip the first stitch purlwise onto the working needle. Take the extra stitch that was made (now second stitch on the working needle) and slip it over the slipped stitch (now the first stitch on the working needle). Pull yarn tail and working yarn tightly and add stitch marker. Continue with pattern. This technique is demonstrated in this video HERE.  You do not need to cast on any extra stitches in subsequent rounds.
  • I recommend using a stitch marker to help you keep track of your rounds begin and end.
  • If you would like to knit a baby version of this hat, please check out my free pattern HERE (also uses Wool-Ease Thick & Quick).
  • Note that the child version can also be found below right after the adult pattern.
  • With a 170 gram ball of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, you can knit one adult hat (98 g) AND one baby hat (54 g)
