Back in 2016, I designed a luxurious statement scarf called the “Moss Fringe Scarf” using “The Wool” by We Are Knitters. I wanted to remake this scarf using a more accessible yarn that is easy to find at local craft stores, so I used the perennial favorite, “Wool-Ease Thick & Quick” by Lion Brand Yarn (super bulky level 6 yarn). To achieve a very chunky and luxurious look, I held the yarn double and used a large 12 mm crochet hook. I have written out the pattern if you would like to use only one strand of yarn and a 10 mm hook too (see the bottom of the pattern).

This scarf is perfect for beginners since it uses the moss/granite stitch which only requires single crochet stitches and chain 1’s. It staggers single crochet stitches row by row as you are working single crochet stitches in the chain spaces of the previous row. When you approach the end of a row, sometimes it is easy to forget to place the last single crochet in the last chain space. I have shown where that last chain space is located in the collage below (where I have inserted my finger). Do not forget to place that last single crochet in this spot, otherwise your scarf will continually shrink row by row! To see the step-by-step tutorial of how to crochet this stitch, you can see the original “Moss Fringe Scarf” blog post HERE!

Continue crocheting row by row to build up the length of your scarf! Keep in mind that you can adjust the length of the scarf by crocheting fewer or more rows depending on your height and where you want the scarf to hit (I am 5’6 for reference).

I like to keep my initial and final ends long so that they can be incorporated into the fringe! Some prefer to keep their scarves fringeless while others like to add fringe – the great part about creating our own items is that we can choose for ourselves!

Here is the free crochet pattern for the Moss Fringe Scarf (Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Version):

Moss Fringe Scarf Wool-Ease Thick & Quick

Description: Crochet this gorgeous beginner-friendly scarf using chunky yarn and a large crochet hook! This warm and stylish statement scarf has beautiful texture and luxurious fringe!

Materials:

Notes:

  • Gauge: 6.5 sts and 6 rows = 4”
  • This scarf is crocheted by holding two strands of yarn together at the same time.
  • This scarf is worked in turned rows using the moss/granite stitch. This stitch uses single crochet stitches interspersed with chain 1 spaces.  On subsequent rows, single crochet stitches are worked in the chain 1 spaces of the previous row.  The stitches are worked in the actual SPACES (not the front and back loops of the chain 1). Inserting your crochet hook into the spaces makes this stitch very fun and quick to crochet. Please see this blog post HERE for a detailed stitch tutorial.
  • The width is determined by the initial number of stitches and the length is determined by the number of rows.
  • To make the scarf more narrow, decrease the number of initial chains – your starting chain should be an odd number. To make the scarf wider, increase the number of initial chains.
  • The turning chain at the beginning of the row counts as one single crochet and one chain 1 space. The number of stitches and chain 1 spaces should add up to the number of initial chains (e.g. if you chain 23, you will have 12 single crochet stitches and 11 chain 1 spaces).
  • To make the scarf longer, add more rows.  To make the scarf shorter, decrease the number of rows. I am 5’6 for height reference.
  • Do not forget to add the last single crochet of the row in the final chain gap (sometimes it can be easy to miss).
  • As an optional step, you can block the final scarf and fringe using a steamer to help relax the fibers and smooth the stitches.
  • If you would like to hold just one strand of yarn to crochet your scarf (and have a less chunky look), I have written out the pattern that will result in similar dimensions (see end of pattern).
  • You can join a new skein of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick by using a felting tool (no need to tie knots or weave in ends). You can see my photo and video tutorial called How to Felt Yarn Ends TogetherHERE!

Final Dimensions: 9”/23 cm wide, 86.5”/220 cm long (without fringe)

***Please watch this video below to see the moss/granite stitch in action!

PATTERN:

Scarf:

Using 12 mm hook and holding two strands of yarn together,

Chain 15 (use an odd number of stitches) and leave a long tail in the beginning, at least 10”/25 cm long (can be incorporated into the fringe later on).

Row 1: Sc in the 3rd chain from the hook. *Ch 1, Skip 1 ch, Sc in the next ch* until end. (8 sc and 7 chain 1 spaces)

Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Sc in the next ch 1 space. *Ch 1, sc in the next ch 1 sp* until end, finishing with a sc in the last chain sp at the start of the previous row.

Row 3-129: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off and leave long end (at least 10”/25 cm – can be incorporated into the fringe later on).

Fringe:

  • Cut 66 strands of yarn, each 22”/56 cm long (33 strands for each side). You can wrap yarn around a book to get even strand lengths.
  • Gather three yarn strands and fold them in half.
  • Insert a crochet hook into a space at the bottom, from wrong side to right side.
  • Pull folded loops of strands through.
  • Pull tips of the strands through the loop.
  • Pull tightly and repeat this process across the bottom edge.
  • Repeat across, aiming for 11 bundles of fringe across the bottom, spacing them evenly across. Initial and final ends of scarf can be incorporated into the fringe.
  • Repeat on other side.
  • Steam block the fringe and trim if necessary (my final fringe measured about 9.5”/24 cm in length).
Moss Fringe Scarf Wool-Ease Thick & Quick

Pattern using one strand of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick:

  • Scarf uses: 570 g/355 yds (4 balls required), remainder of 4th ball can be used for fringe; 10 mm hook
  • Gauge: 8 sts and 8 rows = 4”
  • Final Dimensions: 9”/23 cm wide, 86.5”/220 cm long (without fringe)

Using 10 mm hook and holding one strand of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn,

Chain 19 (use an odd number of stitches) and leave a long tail in the beginning, at least 10”/25 cm long (can be incorporated into the fringe later on).

Row 1: Sc in the 3rd chain from the hook. *Ch 1, Skip 1 ch, Sc in the next ch* until end. (10 sc and 9 chain 1 spaces)

Row 2: Chain 2, turn. Sc in the next ch 1 space. *Ch 1, sc in the next ch 1 sp* until end, finishing with a sc in the last chain sp at the start of the previous row.

Row 3-173: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off and leave long end (at least 10”/25 cm – can be incorporated into the fringe later on). Follow same instructions for fringe (would recommend using two strands of yarn for each bundle).

This picture below shows you what the scarf looks like when holding only one strand of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick! It is very beautiful as well! If you would like to use fewer balls of yarn and want a less chunky look, this is a great option!

This statement scarf makes a big impact with its chunkiness and luxurious fringe! It works up incredibly quickly since you are using such a large crochet hook and holding the yarn double. The moss/granite stitch is one of my favorite crochet stitches of all time, and I love how it is perfect for beginners to learn!

Moss Fringe Scarf Wool-Ease Thick & Quick

The Moss Fringe Scarf is very warm and cozy. It is amazing how wearing this scarf immediately adds warmth to your chest and neck – it is perfect for the cold winters and from shielding yourself from the wind!

I wanted to show you what this scarf looks like if you do not want to include the fringe as well! You could even seam the two ends together to make a beautiful cowl that loops around twice if you wanted to! Note that if you are interested in purchasing the Lion Brand Yarn kit, there are 3 different options to crochet this scarf as they all use varying amounts of yarn. Choose your option depending on how chunky you want the scarf to be and whether you want to include fringe. You can hold one strand of yarn (marked as single strand in the drop down menu – requires 4 balls), hold two strands of yarn together and not include fringe (marked as double strand without fringe – requires 6 balls), and hold two strands of yarn together and include fringe (marked as double strand with fringe – requires 7 balls)! You can find the kit HERE!
