Carry-All Trays

Rewind Tape Yarn by Lion Brand Yarn is such a unique yarn that is perfect for home decor and accessories. It is a level 5 (bulky) yarn that is 70% polyester and 30% viscose. It works up beautifully as it does not fuzz up and has such lovely stitch definition! I was thrilled to use this special yarn to create a set of carry-all trays of various sizes and shapes using their modern colors.

The Rectangular tray is composed of 5 panels: the base, two long side panels, and two short side panels.

The side panels are attached to the base by working slip stitches. To slip stitch two pieces together, insert your crochet hook into the front and back loops of both panels. Yarn over and pull through all the loops. You continue doing this across the edge.

Continue slip stitching the bottom of the side panels to the base.

Next, slip stitch the sides of the short panels to the sides of the long panels.

A rectangular tray has been completed! From here, you can fold down the edges to give a modern cuffed look. You can also sew on an ultraleather garment tag to add a professional touch and to also help keep the folded cuff in place.

Here is the free pattern for the Rectangular Carry-All Tray:

Rectangular Carry-All Tray

Materials:

Gauge: 18 sc and 20 rows = 4″/10 cm

Dimensions: Base: 8.5″/21.6 cm x 4.5″/11.4 cm, Height: 3.75″/9.5 cm (unfolded), 2.75″/7 cm (folded)

Notes:

  • The rectangular carry-all tray is comprised of 5 separate panels.
  • All of the panels are worked in turned rows and then seamed together.
  • The tops edges of the carry-all tray are then folded downwards to give a modern rolled look.

PATTERN:

Bottom Panel:

Chain 41

Row 1: Starting in second chain from hook, sc across. (40 sts)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. (40 sts)

R3-24: Repeat Row 2.

Fasten off. Do not leave long ends as we will be using new yarn to attach the panels together.

Long Side Panels (make 2):

Chain 41

Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. (40 sts)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. (40 sts)

R3-20: Repeat R2.

Fasten off.

Short Side Panels (make 2):

Chain 25

Row 1: Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. (24 sts)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second ch from hook, sc across. (24 sts)

R3-20: Repeat R2.

Fasten off.

Assembly:

It is now time to seam the panels together. Position the long side panels along the long sides of the bottom panel. Position the short side panels along the short sides of the bottom panel.

Working around the perimeter of the bottom panel, slip stitch the bottom of the long side panels and the bottom of the short side panels to the bottom panel. To do so, insert your hook into a stitch along the bottom panel and then into a stitch of the long/short side panel. Yarn over and pull through all loops. Continue in this manner around entire perimeter of bottom.

Next, use slip stitches to seam the sides of the carry-all tray. Seam together the edges of the long side panels to the edges of the short side panels. Weave in all ends.

Lastly, fold the top of the carry-all tray downwards upon itself so that cuff is 1″/2.5 cm.

Optional: Sew fold-over garment tag onto top edge of long side. This helps to secure the cuff into place.

I love the modern look of this Rectangular Carry-All Tray with its straight edges. Most baskets and trays are circular with curved edges, so it is wonderful having a different option available!

Rectangular Carry-All Tray

These Carry-All Trays look so chic and are a great addition to any home. From storing jewelry and face towels to your keys, nail polish and other small items, they are so handy to have around! They would also make fabulous gifts as they work up quickly and are very practical. We can always use more storage for our little yarn balls, right?
