***You can purchase an INEXPENSIVE AD-FREE PDF of this pattern on Etsy HERE and on LoveCrafts HERE– this beautifully formatted PDF includes the step-by-step pictures and is a total of 4 pages including the cover page!  This pattern is also available in the “Easy & Modern Knits PATTERN BUNDLE” which includes over 30 beautiful designs at a discounted price – check out the bundle HERE! The Lion Brand Kit HERE includes the pattern and all the Cobblestone & Wool-Ease yarn you need (choose your own combination of colors)!

Cobblestone Yarn by Lion Brand is one of my favorite new acrylic yarns as it is a worsted weight (level 4) yarn that is plied with a lighter contrast color. This gives the yarn more depth since there is more than just a single color, and I love the colorways “Misty Rose” (a beautiful light pink) and “Fallen Rock” (Greige). Both of these colorways are plied with a cream color, so I knew it would be lovely combining these with Wool-Ease in “Fisherman”. I previously designed a crochet version of this cowl which can be found in this post HERE! I adore how these yarns blend together, and Cobblestone lends itself so well to combining different shades!

I wanted to use a simple stitch for this cowl that looked the same on both sides since this cowl is worn looped twice around the neck. I went with the basic garter stitch as I love the texture it creates. Don’t these shades look so lovely together? If you need a refresher on the garter stitch, check out my “How to Knit the Garter Stitch” blog post as I walk you through how to cast on, knit the garter stitch, and cast off along with detailed photos and a video!

To create smoother edges, slip the first stitch of each row purlwise with the yarn in front. After slipping the first stitch, you then move the yarn to the back and knit the rest of the stitches. I love how such a simple technique results in such clean edges.

Once you are finished working all the color blocks (eight in total in this pattern), you whip stitch the two ends together to form a cowl!

I worked the color blocks so that the two different colors (“Misty Rose” and “Greige”) overlap with each other when looped like this! Follow the instructions below in the pattern if you want the color blocks to overlap as shown in the picture (alternatively, you can have the same color blocks stacking ontop of each other).

Here is the free knit pattern for the Cadence Color-Blocked Cowl:

Cadence Color-Blocked Cowl Knit Pattern

Knit this stunning color-blocked cowl with 3 different shades of yarn that blend harmoniously together.  This cowl makes a bold statement with its gorgeous texture using beginner-friendly stitches.

Materials:

Gauge:  17.5 sts and 30 rows in garter stitch = 4″

Final Measurements: 8.5”/22 cm wide, 80”/203 cm long (each block = 10”/25 cm long)

Notes:

  • This cowl is worked in turned rows using the garter stitch.
  • To create smoother edges, slip the first stitch of each row purlwise with the yarn in front.  Then move the yarn to the back and knit the rest of the stitches.
  • There are 8 different colour blocks and the order is as follows (colors overlap when cowl is looped around, i.e. one block of Yarn A and Yarn C on each side): Yarn A (Misty Rose), Yarn B (Fisherman), Yarn A, Yarn B, Yarn C (Fallen Rock), Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn B. Yarn A is used in 2 blocks, Yarn B is used in 4 blocks, and Yarn C is used in 2 blocks.
  • Note that if you would like two of the same color blocks to stack on one side, follow this yarn order: Yarn A, Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn B, Yarn A, Yarn B, Yarn C, Yarn B.
  • Each color block consists of 78 rows or 39 “garter bumps” (which makes this easier to count the number of rows – each garter bump is equal to 2 rows).
  • When the overall length has been achieved, the ends are whip stitched together to form a cowl.

The garter stitch is one of my favorite knit stitches (as evidenced by the Midtown, Downtown & Uptown Cardigans) as it is so simple and creates such beautiful texture. If you have always been wanting to try your hand at knitting, I recommend you give this pattern a try as it is beginner-friendly! If you are in the mood for a mindless and relaxing project, this cowl works up quickly as you are motivated to complete the next color block!
