I’ve reached a big milestone on my Facebook page as I’ve surpassed 10,000 likes!  To celebrate and say thank you, we wanted to do a little GIVEAWAY [CLOSED]!  In light of all the recent cosplay and Anime-related posts I’ve been doing, we thought it was fitting that we gave away this adorabe “Tea Time Totoro Keychain/Necklace”!

We picked it up this past weekend at the Artist Alley of our local Animethon!  One side shows Totoro enjoying a cup of tea while the other side shows the little white Totoro sitting in a teacup with the soot sprites along with the Japanese characters “Tonari no Totoro" ("My Neighbor Totoro").  It was designed by Canadian artist Angela P. (check out her deviantart HERE) and it also comes with a ball chain necklace so that you can wear it as a piece of jewelry too!

In order to enter, please head over to my Facebook page, “Like" it if you haven’t done so already, and comment on the giveaway post stating what is your favourite anime, anime movie or movie in general!  This contest is open worldwide and will close on Monday, August 18th at 9 PM, MST. If you are under 18, please ask your parents’ permission before entering.  The winner will be announced on my Facebook page!  [GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!  Congrats, Pauleen Potter!!!]

Thank you so much for entering my giveaway, everyone!  I am excited to announce that the winner of the free one year digital subscription to “Inside Crochet" magazine is ANNA (I’ve already e-mailed and tweeted you)!  Congratulations!  Enjoy all the crocheted goodness in this magazine, and once again, thank you everyone for your kind words about my feature!

Inside Crochet Magazine Feature & Giveaway

I am very excited to share my newest magazine feature with you all!  When Lindsey first e-mailed me about being featured in an upcoming issue of “Inside Crochet”, I was incredibly thrilled and honoured.  They first heard about me because they had featured my friend Sarah of “Repeat Crafter Me" in their Issue #51, and Sarah had listed me as one of her favourite bloggers!  Sarah is a blogger whom I deeply admire as she is a busy mom of three and she consistently creates and blogs about her very creative and beautiful craft and crochet projects.  Thank you for the wonderful shout-out, Sarah!  You can read about her feature in "Inside Crochet" HERE.

I am featured in Issue 52, and I was very excited to pick up a copy at my local Chapters!  If you live in the US, you can find this magazine at Barnes & Noble and select Jo-Ann stores.  This issue contains 25 crochet patterns with many of them having a spring and floral theme, such as the “Summer Garden Throw" pictured on the cover of this issue.  I was impressed by the beautiful lay-out of "Inside Crochet" and all the bright, vibrant pictures displayed page after page.  I enjoyed reading about the other crochet artists featured in the magazine as well as the yarn and book reviews.

image

As soon as I got my hands on a hard copy, I excitedly flipped through the pages to find my feature!  I was expecting it to be towards the back, so I kept missing it…my feature was actually near the front on Page 8!  I was delighted they included the pictures of Dragon, Chinese New Year Doll, Pony and my Minnie Mouse Ears Headband.

image

Here is a close-up of my feature so you can read it for yourself!  They slotted me under the “Crochet Entrepeneurs" section- although I don’t know if I would classify myself as an entrepeneur since I don’t currently sell anything or have a business, I am just thankful to be featured in this magazine!

image

Thank you to Lindsey and Adrian and the lovely people of “Inside Crochet" for the wonderful feature!  They have also been very generous as they are offering a free one year digital subscription to a lucky reader!  This means that you will be able to download a digital copy of each month’s issue and therefore be able to access tons of free patterns and high quality content!  It’s a great prize valued at $44.99, and you can read more about their digital subscriptions HERE.  You can enter this giveaway using the Rafflecopter widget below, and there are 6 different ways to enter- none of them are mandatory, but of course the more entries you have, the higher chances you have of winning!

Thank you so much to all my loyal readers who have been so supportive along the way!  It has been a huge blessing and honour sharing in these exciting and special moments with you all :)

This week I am celebrating my 3 Year Blogiversary!  I can’t believe it’s been three years since I wrote my first blog post, and as each year goes by, it continues to amaze me that I have this outlet to share my creativity and crochet projects with you all!  Some of the highlights from this past year include being featured in the premiere issue of "Simply Crochet" magazine, and winning 1st place in the “Design/Home/DIY/Craft” category of the Canadian "2013 Made in Blog Awards"!  I also really enjoyed putting together the “Amigurumi & Crochet Blog Directory" where I learned about so many fellow crochet artists around the world!

[GIVEAWAY CLOSED: Congrats to the winner, Anna S. of “Spool of Sunshine”!]

Hey everyone!  I ordered this super cute “Keep Calm and Carry Yarn" pendant on Etsy recently and had to share it with you since I know we are all yarn lovers!!!  Click on the pictures to get a better view of it- there’s a ball of yarn on top and it’s a beautiful fuscia colour!  I ordered it from a fellow Canadian named Lisa who makes many different pendants using wooden Scrabble tiles in her shop called "Pieces of Me Pendants”.  I thought this pendant was really cute since the “Keep Calm” meme is so popular these days and the “Carry Yarn” is a clever take on the “Carry On”!

The good news is that Lisa offered to do a GIVEAWAY for my readers too!  She is allowing the winner to choose any pendant and any chain from her shop (I am wearing the snake chain for those of you interested)!!!

Yesterday was Thanksgiving in Canada and I wanted to share how thankful I am to God for my family, my friends, my church family and the opportunity and blessing to be a wife and a mother.  Our little girl is turning 1 this week and the year has absolutely flown by!  I am so very thankful that I was able to pursue my creative and crafty side after putting it on the back burner for so many years when I was super busy with school.  Sometimes it is still surreal to me that I have a blog and that I’m crocheting little stuffed animals and sharing my work with the world (stay tuned for some new amigurumi coming your way soon)!  I am so incredibly thankful to you, my readers, for always expressing how appreciative you are and giving us so much feedback about our work. It really does spur us on and we love reading all your comments and seeing your work!  I have made many good friends along the way (you know who you are :D) and it’s been amazing connecting with people with similar passions and interests!   I have so many loyal readers who have followed me throughout the years and have seen my style and blogging progress.  Every time I hit a milestone on Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter or Instagram I’m always itching to do a giveaway to thank my followers, so here we go!

To enter the GIVEAWAY [NOW CLOSED]:

(1) Leave a comment below (through Disqus comments) saying what YOU are THANKFUL for!  I can’t wait to read the entries and share the love :)

(2) Visit Lisa’s “Pieces of Me Pendants" shop on Etsy HERE and take a look at her different pendants and chains (snake, ball or box chains) available.  In the same comment above state what pendant and chain you would choose if you are the winner!

This contest is open worldwide and will close on Sunday, October 20th at 8 PM, MST.  If you are under 18, please ask your parents’ permission before entering.  I will randomly choose a winner!  Thank you so much to Lisa for partnering with me in this giveaway!

[GIVEAWAY CLOSED!!!  Thank you for entering :)  The blog directory is now posted HERE!]
I have been working hard on compiling our amigurumi & crochet blog directory and will be publishing it soon!  However, we thought it would be fun to play a little guessing game, complete with a prize!
Leave a response below guessing the total number of blogs in the directory at this moment in time (at the publishing of this current post) since more blogs are always trickling in.  You can guess through my Facebook page, Twitter or Instagram as well!  The person who guesses the closest will win the beautiful green B/2.25 mm Clover Amour crochet hook pictured above!  I have been using Amour crochet hooks for the past couple of months and have been loving them!  I will be doing a full blog post about them soon too :)
In the event of a tie, I will randomly choose a winner!  This guessing game is open worldwide and will close on Wednesday evening (August 7th, 9 PM MST) when the directory will be published! Happy guessing!
***The winners of the blog directory guessing game are "AmiCrafter" (blog comments) and "Bisukiut" (Instagram) as both guessed 183, and there were 184 blogs in the directory at the time of the contest!  By random draw, AmiCrafter will receive the crochet hook, but we didn’t want to leave Bisukiut empty-handed, so she will receive a bunny felt kit :)  Congratulations and thanks for guessing!  Many of you were very close!***

My Nursing Fashion: Momzelle Giveaway [CLOSED] & CoverBoo Couture

Once again, this blog post is somewhat of a departure from what I typically blog about (crochet, baking, travel), similar to when I blogged about “My Maternity Fashion" here.  At first I was hesitant about whether I should blog about this, but I decided that other mamas and mamas-to-be might find it helpful, so I decided to go for it!  I will highlight two Canadian companies that have made items that I’ve loved so far as a new mama :)

I always knew I wanted to breastfeed Myla from the very beginning because of all the health benefits for both Myla and I (not to mention it also burns 500 calories a day!).  I must say that I’ve really been enjoying it for the past 4 months and I’ve found our nursing sessions to be precious bonding time.  After getting the hang of it in the comfort of our home, I was nervous about taking our little newborn out and having to feed her in public settings.

I knew that wearing certain clothing items and outfits would make nursing in public very cumbersome, and I hadn’t even thought about how my wardrobe would now be somewhat restricted since I was breastfeeding (I thought I was already past the “wardrobe limitation” phase of being pregnant!).  Button-down shirts, v-necks, and tank tops + cardigans were now the way to go as I would scan each item in my closet and assess how easy/difficult it would be to feed Myla in it.  I decided to research what different nursing clothing options were available to facilitate breastfeeding in public.

I came across a Canadian company based out of Montreal called “Momzelle" that was founded by a mom named Christine Poirier.  Christine made her own nursing top after having her baby daughter and started Momzelle after all her friends were asking about her tops.  As I browsed the different Momzelle clothing items, the items that stood out to me were the tank tops.  I knew having a nursing tank top would be a good investment since I could layer different pieces ontop of it (cardigans, shirts) in addition to wearing it on its own.  I ended up ordering two black tank tops: the "Original Nursing Tank Top" and the "Xtra Long Nursing Tank Top”.

image

I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived shortly in the mail.  They felt like they were very good quality!  These two black tank tops are made out of 94% cotton and 6% spandex.  One of my tank tops was made in Canada while the other was made in Peru.  Momzelle states that all of their nursing clothing is ethically made.

image

Both tank tops have these openings for discrete breastfeeding.  It makes breastfeeding a lot easier as you do not have to lift your entire tank top or shirt up to feed- your belly and back remain covered and the baby has easy access for feeding!  If you would like to see photos of some Momzelle tops in action with nursing moms, click here.  For you “Dragon’s Dens" fans out there, Christine was actually featured on the show and got funding for Momzelle- check out the clip here!

image

I was excited to try them on right away as it’s always a little scary ordering clothing online as you can never guarantee a perfect fit.  I was so happy that I had chosen the right size as they fit me very well!  Both tank tops were incredibly comfortable and had a sleek look.  This is the “Original Nursing Tank Top”!

image

You need to wear a nursing bra with these tops and I love how the thick black straps of the tank tops cover the bra straps.  There are nursing tank tops available on the market that have built-in bras, but in my experience, I found them to either be too low-cut, less supportive or less comfortable.  The flaps are quite discrete, especially since these tank tops are black and when items are worn ontop of them. This is the “Xtra Long Nursing Tank Top”!

image

I am particularly happy with the “Xtra Long Nursing Tank Top" as it can be hard to find tank tops of this length, especially a nursing one!  It’s nice having a tank top that doesn’t ride up with such great coverage (perfect for extra tall mamas too!).  I’ve worn this top so much ever since receiving it in the mail, and it’s stretched a bit since it is 6% spandex.  Overall though, it’s held up well.  I thought I would show you how I styled some of my outfits featuring this long tank top…

Here I paired it with an oversized cardigan, a scarf, and jeggings!

image

For a bit of a dressier feel, I paired it with my peach blazer and jeggings.  A simple black tank top is so versatile…

image

I absolutely love wearing leggings since they are so comfortable.  I practically lived in leggings while I was pregnant and I wanted to continue wearing them post-partum, particularly since I still could not fit into my pre-pregnancy jeans!  This long tank top works perfectly with leggings, and I am so happy that I don’t have to lift up my long tunics or tops in order to feed Myla.  Here I layered a chambray shirt and long cardigan overtop my long nursing tank top with leggings and a colourful scarf.  This has been a perfect winter outfit on those cold days.  Keeping all the layers open facilitates easy access to the nursing tank top and easy breastfeeding!

image

Haha, we happened to go grocery shopping this same day we were taking these shots, so I thought I’d show another typical outfit I’ve worn out and about.  Here is my Xtra Long Nursing Tank Top paired with my high low sweater, jeggings, circle scarf and over-the-knee boots.  I really love the length of this tank!

image

Here is a picture of my sweet baby girl Myla and I at a baby shower!  I am wearing the same long tank top paired with leggings and a crocheted sweater ontop.  Both this sweater and the above sweater are light and can be easily lifted away for breastfeeding.  I just love Myla’s big smiles and adorable laugh…melts my heart!

image

I wear my “Original Nursing Tank Top" with shorter cardigans, like these two below:

image

Did you notice the feathers scarf in the above outfit?  It’s no ordinary scarf….it’s actually a nursing scarf!

image

CoverBoo Couture is a line of nursing scarves from Edmonton, founded by a mom named Maria who wanted to nurse discretely in public.  These scarves are perfect for moms who want more coverage while nursing or for those who have distractible babies!  Just how does this scarf turn into a cover?  Let me show you!

You can wear the CoverBoo doubled up like I am here, knotted, or as a long circle scarf.  It’s neat because these scarves serve as a fashion accessory in addition to a nursing cover, and it’s very convenient whenever you want to nurse since you are already wearing your cover!  They can be easily stored in your purse too since they are so lighweight.

image

When you’re ready to nurse, you unwrap the scarf…

image

So that it’s a single layer like this!

image

Then you look for the neck hole…

image

And slip your head through it!

image

Pull your arm through…

image

And you’re ready to nurse your sweet baby!  You get great coverage and baby is less distracted by what’s going on around them :)

image

Check out this video of Maria demonstrating how to use a CoverBoo here and see it in action hereBabyBellyKelli also did a great video review of her CoverBoo here

image

These CoverBoos are all designed and manufactured in Canada, and they come in an array of patterns and fabrics.  Their lightweight, airy feel are perfect for the upcoming spring and summer months, and Maria just released her Spring Collection last week!  These nursing scarves look very different than the other nursing covers currently on the market, and they are such a clever and simple design.  They don’t offer a rigid neckline as others do (see here), but you can always lift the opening at the neck hole to peek and make eye contact with your baby!

I love that both of these companies are Canadian and founded by real moms who were making products to help them on their breastfeeding journeys.  I also love scoring good deals, and I managed to purchase all of these products when they were on sale!  Momzelle had a great Black Friday sale (tops up to 40% off with an additional 10% off) and CoverBoo Couture had an amazing Christmas Eve sale (50% off all CoverBoos).  Thus, if you are interested in any of their products, I highly recommend liking their facebook pages so you can get their notifications and keep up-to-date with their products!  You can find the Momzelle Facebook page here and the Coverboo Couture Facebook page here

I approached both companies and told them how I would be writing about my positive experiences using their products.  I asked if they could provide any discounts for my readers in case they were interested in purchasing their products right away!  Both companies replied incredibly promptly and were very generous.

image

Maria of CoverBoo Couture is offering a 15% off discount for readers of “All About Ami” with the coupon code “AMI15”, and it expires on February 28 (Canadian shipping is $5, international shipping is $10, and free local pick-up is available if you live in Edmonton).  Check out the CoverBoo Couture website HERE and see if you want to order any for yourself or for your friends!

image

Momzelle is offering a $5 discount for readers of “All About Ami” with the coupon code “AMIGRMI5” (no expiry date) and a $30 gift card as a give-away!  ***To enter, please leave a comment below stating which nursing top you would buy if you won the $30 gift card!***  Check out the Momzelle website HERE.  This giveaway is open worldwide until Thursday, February 28.  I will randomly choose a winner and announce who it is on my facebook page HERE.  For your information, shipping is $5 per order in Canada and the US (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) and is pricier to other countries (see shipping costs here). [NOTE: The giveaway is now CLOSED: Congrats to Sarah Clymer, the winner of the $30 gift card!!!]

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my nursing fashion and how these products have made it a lot easier to breastfeed my baby girl.  I think the nursing tops and nursing cover are a good investment, especially if you consider how long moms breastfeed for and if there are plans on breastfeeding more children in the future.  The tank tops and cover also work well together for those who want a lot of coverage while nursing in public as absolutely nothing is exposed.  They would make great gifts for your friends or family who are expectant or new mamas who are going to nurse (particularly the CoverBoos since they’re one size fits all!).  Thank you to Momzelle and CoverBoo Couture for your great products and for providing us with coupon codes too!  I love how they both made the coupon codes based on “amigurumi" [the Japanese art of knitted/crocheted stuffed animals, which is what my blog is all about in case you’re new here!].  I had fun putting together these outfits and showing you my style and how I’ve adapted my wardrobe in my new role as a nursing mama!

Please feel free to forward this post to your pregnant or mama friends as well so they can enter the giveaway and access these awesome discount codes too :)  Thanks for reading and I’d love to hear what you think about this post!

Mikaylove Giveaway! [CLOSED]

I still very vividly remember back in March 2011 when I received an e-mail from a blog reader named Kay.  I had just started my blog two months prior in January and not very many people knew about my work.  Kay said that she had found my Valentine Teddy pattern and had made her very own!  This was the very first time someone had sent me pictures of their work using my pattern, and I was so incredibly excited.  I had spent hours writing up my patterns (there were only two at the time) and figuring out my designs, so to know that someone was using it somewhere in the world was incredibly special!  You can see Kay’s Valentine Teddy here.

Kay started her own blog called “I’m Hooked" and I loved perusing it as she posted adorable pics of her popsicle keychains, mini wallets/pouches, and all the lovely items she made for her baby girl (what a shoe collection!).  What really caught my eye was her cute amigurumi penguin pattern that she had translated HERE.  It was my first time crocheting with two colours at the same time, and I absolutely loved how this cutie turned out!  You can read Penguin’s step-by-step blog post here.  I think this little penguin would make an adorable Christmas ornament, don’t you?

image

Kay and I kept in touch, and I am so thankful for her love, support and prayers for our family.  We are now both moms to beautiful baby girls!  She even sent us a package full of goodies for baby Myla- this really brightened up my day and lifted my spirits as the first few weeks coming home from the hospital were challenging at times.  Her thoughtfulness and generosity blew me away!

image

As we were messaging each other, Kay revealed how she had started her blog when she was pregnant and a bit lonesome.  Kay wrote,

"It was your pattern that got people to even look at my page and from there I gained an audience that was interested in my work and most importantly, me. And even though I no longer blog, I will be forever grateful of the amigurumi bear pattern that changed my life.  So, thank you!"

This brought me to tears, knowing how much of an impact my blog could have on someone.  I’ve received at least a half dozen e-mails from people all stating that they’ve been inspired to start their own blogs after seeing “All About Ami”, and I’m always so overjoyed to hear this.  God has given me this platform to express and share my creativity and love of crochet with others, and I am so happy to hear that it has impacted others in such a positive way!

Even though Kay no longer blogs, she too has found a way to do what she loves and share it with others through her Etsy store called “Mikaylove" that she has just launched.  Mikaylove is derived from her daughter’s name “Mikayla”, and as a stay at home mom, Kay was inspired by her love for her baby girl to create a handcrafted jewelry line that would appeal and be affordable to all audiences.  Kay sent me some of her pieces and I immediately fell in love with their elegant and classy designs.  I liked them so much that I ordered some more for myself and my family!

image

Kay sent me the “Cross Weave Bracelet in Peach" (LOVE this) and the "Double Wrap Bracelet in Maroon" (maroon/burgundy or ‘oxblood’ is such a trendy colour right now for the fall!).

image

image

Kay’s classic designs go well with any outfit and you can definitely dress them up or dress them down!  I looove stacking bracelets to add interest to my outfits….can you ever have enough bracelets?

image

I ordered the stunning “Mikaylove Original Design Necklace in Turquoise & Grey" for myself since I love the colour combo and bib necklaces are so popular right now!  Isn’t it gorgeous?

image

I also ordered the “Double Wrap Bracelet in Mint Green" since I love this colour.  I think peach and mint green go so well together!

image

The little “Mikaylove” tag of authenticity on each piece is very cute too :)

image

I think that all of the Mikaylove pieces are affordable, with prices comparable to those found in retail chain stores, except these pieces are all handmade!  I am all for supporting handmade artisans and moms who are working from home.  Kay has many different pieces available in a vast array of colours (see pic below for more of her designs).  Please check out her store HERE to see her collections!  You can also find Mikaylove on instagram too (@Mikayloveinc).

image
