Homespun Cover Siu Mai Amigurumi Feature

Remember the amigurumi siu mai I crocheted three years ago?  Recently they were featured in the July issue of “Homespun Magazine”, Australia’s leading monthly craft title!  Click on each pic above to get a closer look at each page :)  It’s neat how my little pork dumplings are getting some time to shine in the Land Down Under- have any of my Australian readers checked out “Homespun” before?  If you want to crochet your own expressive siu mai, be sure to visit the step-by-step blog post HERE and the very easy free pattern HERE!

Hand Made Toys Bookazine

Hello everyone!  I wanted to share about an exciting feature that my amigurumi Dragon has in a beautiful new bookazine called “Hand Made Toys”!

image

When Helen, the editor of “Hand Made Toys”, asked if my Dragon could be included in this special edition, I happily said yes.  Helen is an editor at Future Publishing in the UK, and this publishing company is behind “Simply Crochet" and "Mollie Makes”.  As some of you may remember, Dragon was also previously featured in the premier issue of “Simply Crochet" magazine last year!  I was very impressed when I received my own hard copy of this bookazine as all the projects included are incredibly cute and whimsical!

image

Hand Made Toys" contains 40 toy designs to crochet, knit and sew.  I loved seeing the different crafts put together in one magazine, and some of the sewing designs really caught my eye…I have already forgotten how to use my sewing machine, but there are some hand-stitched toy patterns that I could possibly try!  The crocheted hedgehogs seen on the cover look absolutely adorable too- I might have to make some :)

image

The bookazine is divided into 5 sections: (1) “Once Upon A Time" containing fairytale and rhyme characters including my Dragon; (2) “Busy Bees" containing indoor toys for children; (3) “Special Friends" containing a variety of adorable animals; (4) “Let’s Pretend" containing delicious play food and treats; and (5) “Just For Fun" containing mini toys for big craft and play happiness!

image

I am so happy to have my amigurumi Dragon featured in “Hand Made Toys" along with some of my other crochet blogger friends including Mei of “Amigurumei" and Tanya of “Little Things Blogged”!  Thank you for including my work in your bookazine, Helen!  It truly is a delightful magazine with such a wide variety of cute toys!

If you’re interested in getting your hands on your own copy, you can order “Hand Made Toys" by mail HERE or find copies in WH Smith stores and leading newsagents in the UK and in Barnes & Noble stores in the US.  You can also buy a digital copy of “Hand Made Toys" through the Apple Newsstand (download the free Simply Crochet container app, and the digital version of Hand Made Toys will be available there).  I think it’s so special how people all over the world are continuing to discover my amigurumi Dragon pattern, often through features such as these, and I truly adore seeing all the Dragons who have been crocheted with so much love

Inside Crochet Magazine Feature & Giveaway

I am very excited to share my newest magazine feature with you all!  When Lindsey first e-mailed me about being featured in an upcoming issue of “Inside Crochet”, I was incredibly thrilled and honoured.  They first heard about me because they had featured my friend Sarah of “Repeat Crafter Me" in their Issue #51, and Sarah had listed me as one of her favourite bloggers!  Sarah is a blogger whom I deeply admire as she is a busy mom of three and she consistently creates and blogs about her very creative and beautiful craft and crochet projects.  Thank you for the wonderful shout-out, Sarah!  You can read about her feature in "Inside Crochet" HERE.

I am featured in Issue 52, and I was very excited to pick up a copy at my local Chapters!  If you live in the US, you can find this magazine at Barnes & Noble and select Jo-Ann stores.  This issue contains 25 crochet patterns with many of them having a spring and floral theme, such as the “Summer Garden Throw" pictured on the cover of this issue.  I was impressed by the beautiful lay-out of "Inside Crochet" and all the bright, vibrant pictures displayed page after page.  I enjoyed reading about the other crochet artists featured in the magazine as well as the yarn and book reviews.

image

As soon as I got my hands on a hard copy, I excitedly flipped through the pages to find my feature!  I was expecting it to be towards the back, so I kept missing it…my feature was actually near the front on Page 8!  I was delighted they included the pictures of Dragon, Chinese New Year Doll, Pony and my Minnie Mouse Ears Headband.

image

Here is a close-up of my feature so you can read it for yourself!  They slotted me under the “Crochet Entrepeneurs" section- although I don’t know if I would classify myself as an entrepeneur since I don’t currently sell anything or have a business, I am just thankful to be featured in this magazine!

image

Thank you to Lindsey and Adrian and the lovely people of “Inside Crochet" for the wonderful feature!  They have also been very generous as they are offering a free one year digital subscription to a lucky reader!  This means that you will be able to download a digital copy of each month’s issue and therefore be able to access tons of free patterns and high quality content!  It’s a great prize valued at $44.99, and you can read more about their digital subscriptions HERE.  You can enter this giveaway using the Rafflecopter widget below, and there are 6 different ways to enter- none of them are mandatory, but of course the more entries you have, the higher chances you have of winning!

Malaysia Home & Decor Magazine Feature

I have some very exciting news to share with you all!  I was featured in the June 2013 issue of Malaysia’s “Home & Décor” Magazine!  This is the beautiful cover…

image

Mei of Meimoirs, a fellow amigurumi artist who is extremely talented and creative, first contacted me in March and told me that she was doing a story about the “Global Handmade Movement" for the magazine.  I was so honoured that she wanted to feature me!  Mei did a wonderful job with the story as she talks about the rising popularity of handmade items, Pinterest, DIY tutorials and Etsy, as well as how social media has really helped spread the popularity of crafting.  Handmade items are definitely a breath of fresh air in a world of mass consumerism and big-box stores!

image

The story features five artists from around the world, including Canada (me), France, Australia and Malaysia!  I really enjoyed reading about the other artists and seeing their work :)  It is definitely neat to see and hear about what is going on around the crafting world!

image

My feature includes pictures of Snuggles, Dragon, Sweetheart Bunny and my Long Double Crochet Cowl!

image

Here is my feature in the magazine!  Give it a read…perhaps you’ll learn something new about me!

image

Thank you to Malaysia’s Home & Décor Magazine for the lovely feature, and thank you so very much to Mei for writing up such a great story and including me!  Check out Mei’s amigurumi work on her blog HERE!

Simply Crochet Magazine Feature

As some of you know, I was recently featured in a beautiful new crochet magazine called “Simply Crochet”!  I was thrilled when Debora, the editor-in-chief of “Simply Crochet" first contacted me in early November about being involved with a secret new magazine they were launching in the new year.  The magazine sounded very promising and interesting, and I jumped at the chance to be a part of it!

The first issue of “Simply Crochet" came out in the UK and on Apple Newsstand in January 2013, and we immediately bought a digital copy of it on our iPad.  I was very impressed by the beautiful lay-outs, pretty patterns and picture guides for those who were new to crochet.  I absolutely couldn’t wait to get my hands on a hard copy of it so I could share my magazine feature with you all!

I wasn’t able to find a copy of the first issue of “Simply Crochet" at my local bookstore until last week!  Chapters Indigo was kind enough to call me as soon as they received copies of the magazine.  Since it is from the UK, it took a while for it to come to Canada.  I know the US got it earlier at Barnes & Noble- thank you for your tweets, Facebook and Instagram messages letting me know that you had spotted me in the magazine!  That was very sweet :)  I was so incredibly excited to see the magazine in person!

image

It’s surreal picking up a magazine and seeing your work and picture in it!  I never in a million years thought that I would be featured in a magazine.  Haha, part of me wanted to go around the store and say, “Look…that’s me!” (I didn’t end up doing this :P).

image

image

Here is Simply Crochet’s youngest reader, five and a half month old Myla!  I think she spotted some familiar faces…

image

Myla was only 5 weeks old in our family photo in the magazine.  How time flies…

image

This is the front cover of the first issue of “Simply Crochet”!  It’s such an honour that my amigurumi Dragon was featured on the cover and in the top right corner!  This makes him very visible when the magazine is stacked behind other magazines.

image

The first issue also came with two crochet hooks: a pink 4 mm crochet hook and a bright yellow 6 mm crochet hook.  This gives the magazine a little more value since it is pricey at $13.99 CAD (£4.99 in the UK).

image

Here you can see a picture of me holding Dragon in the Table of Contents!

image

I was very honoured that they listed me as one of the “Contributors” for this issue!

image

They included an article entitled, “What is Amigurumi?" to introduce people to the Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals in case they had never seen it before…

image

And on the next page there was a big picture of my Dragon!  Doesn’t he look so sweet?

image

It was neat seeing my Dragon pattern typed up nicely in a magazine.  They did a great job with the lay-out as the steps coincided with the pictures along the bottom.  At first when I read the pattern I was a little taken aback as I saw all the double crochets.  I momentarily forgot that single crochets are double crochets in UK crochet terminology!

image

On the following pages was the feature of our family!  I was very flattered by the title of the article: “An Amigurumi Sensation: Creating adorable amigurumi while caring for an equally cute newborn?  It’s all in a day’s work for crochet devotee Stephanie Lau”.  A colleage of Debora’s named Judy sent me about a dozen interview questions to answer back in November.  Myla was less than a month old and I was very sleep-deprived and recovering from labour.  I slowly chipped away at those questions when I felt like I had a little energy and was somewhat coherent, but it felt like an eternity before I finally finished answering all of their questions to the best of my ability.  I think Judy did a wonderful job writing up the article based on my answers!  Some of you said that you learned some new things about me (e.g. my husband Ryan takes all of the lovely photos for the blog!) and that you enjoyed the feature too :)

image

It still astounds me how popular Dragon is!  He is definitely my most popular amigurumi and I’ve really enjoyed seeing your versions and hearing your lovely feedback about the pattern.  Some of you have stated that it’s your favourite amigurumi pattern and that you’ve been inspired to learn how to crochet just to make him!

Simply Crochet" introduced some new readers to my blog and I am so thankful to have been a part of the launch of such a beautiful new crochet magazine.  The bright images, aesthetic lay-outs and great project ideas (jewelry, items for the home, fashion) make this a very modern magazine that makes crocheting appealing to all generations…no longer is crocheting just a "grandma’s hobby" anyore!  (Side note: I remember teaching my classmate in Grade 6 how to crochet and a boy laughed at us and called us old ladies when he saw what we were doing!).  “Simply Crochet" also has a very lovely blog that you can keep up with here

Thank you so much to the staff of “Simply Crochet" for featuring me and for letting me be a part of your magazine!  And thank you to all our readers for continuing to support, encourage and help inspire us to keep being creative- Ryan and I cannot thank you enough!  We have more new projects coming up (including a new amigurumi that we will be unveiling next week!), and we can’t wait to share them with you :D

I have been loving my new crochet hook case that I picked up in Tokyo!  It’s the perfect size with vibrant colours and a zipper that slides like a dream ;)  I picked it up at Tokyu Hands in Shibuya, and it’s by a company called United Bees Japan.
I would also be delighted if you checked out this lovely interview and feature of me by Sunny of Oh So Sunny HERE.  Her post made me smile from ear to ear and I felt so humbled and blessed to have such loyal and kind readers.  Sunny hails from Valencia, Spain where she is part of a group called “Knit and Fun” that promotes crafty living. They organize free weekly gatherings in different cozy cafes in Valencia where crafty people can gather to chat and exchange knowledge while enjoying drinks and cupcakes! They also organize workshops with local artists to promote various crafts such as creative sewing, amigurumi, ceramics, and more.
I’ve always wanted to visit Spain, and Sunny graciously offered to give us an amazing tour of her city should we ever visit!  What “Knit and Fun” is doing sounds absolutely wonderful, and I hope I can join them someday!  Once again, please check out my feature HERE (there is also English translation for the non-Spanish speakers!). Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and support, Sunny!
